PA School Districts Choose BitLeap Backup
May. 24, 2006 1:35pm
The Capital Area Intermediate Unit, an educational servicing agency for 24 Pennsylvania mid-state school districts, has signed a multi-year deal with BitLeap to provide advanced online backup services to school districts across Pennsylvania. Under the deal, both the CAIU’s (PA IU-15) member school districts and school districts from other participating Intermediate Units in PA will be able to take advantage of the CAIU’s investment in a private data storage center to provide advanced backup services from Bitleap at a reduced cost.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer this truly custom and advance online backup solution for IU-15 and all of the school districts that they will support with this project,”
BitLeap’s CEO, Guy Suter, commented. He continued,
“BitLeap’s backup technology is unique and powerful in many ways including reliability, security and efficiency. However, its ability to be scalable and deployed and managed in a private environment really makes BitLeap stand out from the crowd. Being selected to help protect the information in our public schools is a fulfilling task for all of BitLeap’s staff.”
The data backup setup at the Capital Area Intermediate Unit will include a combination of CAIU-owned data storage devices managed by BitLeap and remote data storage devices owned and operated by BitLeap. The data storage capabilities of the CAIU’s facility for district backups will start out at about six terabytes in raw storage size, which could manage well over twenty terabytes of backed up file versions using BitLeap’s technology. The system has been designed to grow as the participating school districts’ backup needs grow by simply adding more equipment.
CAIU IT Director Carl Heininger assisted in planning the implementation of BitLeap’s backup service at the CAIU’s facility in Summerdale, PA. He commented that
“BitLeap’s backup technology will allow school districts in PA to have access to a managed backup solution that offers increased flexibility and value over their current backup procedures. It will also take advantage of our already deployed fiber WAN network between the schools to transfer the backup data securely and help protect our school district’s from data loss or theft.”
BitLeap’s backup technology gives school districts the advanced ability to efficiently retain as many versions of their data files as they would like to instead of being limited to a typical two week tape backup history. Each school district that uses BitLeap’s backup service through the CAIU will also have a dedicated backup storage appliance managed by BitLeap installed at their location. Some of the districts using these backup services or in the process of installing them include Big Spring, Cumberland Valley, Mechanicsburg, South Middleton, Upper Dauphin, West Perry and West Shore school districts. BitLeap is also in talks with several other Pennsylvania Intermediate Units about extending or replicating the CAIU’s program to serve the backup needs of school districts across the country.
