BitLeap Integrates New E-mail Archiving Product with Data Backup Service

Nov. 6, 2007 2:25pm

Carlisle, PA – BitLeap®, a new entrant in Gartner’s 2007 Online Server Backup Services Report for its local and offsite data backup services, is introducing a message level e-mail data retention and backup product, which is completely integrated with its local and offsite backup service.

Breakdown of new e-mail archiving product major features:

  • Tools to help maintain e-Discovery e-mail compliance
  • Powerful discovery tools — users can select individual mailboxes for viewing, filtering and restoring information
  • Single, easy to use, highly visual online interface
  • Ability to easily manage many locations from one interface
  • Scalability to thousands of mailboxes through paginated and filtered management control panel
  • Message level e-mail backup and retention for Microsoft Exchange® and Novell GroupWise®
  • Clear and understandable backup reports
  • Affordable — e-mail archiving for $1 monthly per mailbox, storage integrated with BitLeap’s current offsite backup service plans
  • Archiving to one local and two offsite locations for fast restorability and full disaster recovery

BitLeap’s new system allows for direct connection to the Exchange or GroupWise server and to capture all the e-mail messages, on a message-level basis, as they come and go. The solution is completely integrated with BitLeap’s existing local and offsite data backup services. Customers can easily control message-level data retention and backup settings from a single interface using BitLeap’s familiar online control panel.

The e-mail archiving solution is designed for a business of any size. Customers can add total message level data retention for their e-mail system for $1 per mailbox per month plus storage, yet the interface is designed to handle customers with thousands of mailboxes.

BitLeap’s CEO Guy Suter warns,

Being properly prepared to respond to electronic data reproducibility requirements set out in the updated federal rules on civil proceedings is an important issue for all businesses.

Commenting on BitLeap’s entrance into the rapidly growing e-Discovery services arena Suter comments,

Our flexible data retention options for file based backups have been continually cited by customers as a true value-add of our service for regulatory compliance of many kinds. Based on that feedback we identified e-mail archiving and retention as a natural product expansion for BitLeap, where we could add new value for businesses.

Law firm Rhoads & Sinon LLP based in Harrisburg, PA consistently provide valuable legal council to BitLeap and have expressed a great deal of interest in the new e-mail retention and backup product designed to help businesses achieve better e-Discovery practices.

Rhoads & Sinon partner, Kevin Gold Esq. lectures frequently on e-Discovery and document retention and has successfully litigated several cases involving electronic discovery. According to Mr. Gold,

Amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure effective December 1, 2006 required companies to store and be able to produce electronic information. And the reality with technology is that most communication today is electronic. Big business and the financial industry have recognized and responded to the new rules, but most small and medium businesses are just starting to recognize that they have a legal obligation to do it.

The proper retention and capacity to reproduce e-mail is a major step in dealing with new e-Discovery realities for businesses. Mr. Gold states,

E-mail in particular can be very important to winning or losing a case. In business disputes or employment disputes such as a harassment or discrimination case, e-mail often is critical to a case. The ability to retain the sheer volume of information and the ability to search and produce information quickly is critical. Time cost and out of pocket costs can be substantial. BitLeap is offering a cost-effective solution.

BitLeap’s product expansion into e-mail archiving and retention reflect the company’s intention to continue building off its core technology in developing new and improved backup solutions that meet real market needs. Suter explains,

BitLeap’s goal is to provide business users with backup products and services that are truly valuable because of their sheer simplicity and the control they give to users. Our local and offsite data backup service was breakthrough because of its highly efficient de-duplication and bit-differential analysis techniques. This allows users to transfer and store much greater amounts of data very affordably. Now we are expanding that technology with an integrated e-mail archiving product that provides similar automatic offsite data retention and backup of e-mail messages, again at a highly affordable cost.
