Restoring Exchange Full Backups
BitLeap® provides a quick and simple interface to restore your Exchange Full backups from our service back to your Exchange install. There are a few steps that you must follow before actually setting off the restore. These steps differ slightly if you are restoring after a disaster that has caused you to reinstall your Exchange server or just restoring a Storage Group back to a previous date. If any of these instructions don’t seem clear enough, please call our support to get more help.
Notice: Currently we do not support restoring to Exchange Recovery Storage Groups. We are working to develop this capability very soon.
Prerequisites
- Download and install newest BitLeap Windows Agent
- Active Directory should be installed and be sure it has Exchange configured (System State restoration may be required if recovering from a disaster)
- Exchange with Exchange Management Tools is installed (using
/disasterrecoveryswitch if recovering from a disaster)
Disaster Recovery Pre-Restore Steps
- Using the Exchange System Manager, dismount all of the Stores for your Storage Group
- Stop the Microsoft Exchange Information Store Service
- Delete all files inside of your Storage Group data directory (typically
C:/Program Files/Exchsrvr/STORAGEGROUPNAMEwhere STORAGEGROUPNAME is the name of the Storage Group that you are restoring) or move them to another non-conflicting location if you want to be extra safe. - Start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store Service
- Stop the Microsoft Exchange Information Store Service once more
- Make sure all files inside of your Storage Group data directory are still removed or moved (typically
C:/Program Files/Exchsrvr/STORAGEGROUPNAMEwhere STORAGEGROUPNAME is the name of the Storage Group that you are restoring) - Proceed to the Control Panel Restore steps below
Normal Pre-Restore Steps
- Using the Exchange System Manager, dismount all of the Stores for your Storage Group
- Proceed to the Control Panel Restore steps below
Control Panel Restore Steps
- Goto
https://customer.bitleap.com/locations/(logging in if you are prompted to) and locate your Exchange Full Backups by clicking on the blue arrows next to your LeapServ and Exchange server. - Click on the name of the full backup item, which should then take you to the Exchange Browser.
- Select the Storage Group you wish to restore. This should refresh the right pane with dates of when backups have occurred in the past.
- Select the date you wish to restore to. This should refresh the bottom pane to show you information about that backup run (status, number of warnings, new items, modifed items, removed items, etc). You should select any date that reported a successful status. Feel free to view the report for a backup run to get more information before restoring.
- When you are ready to restore, click the
Restorebutton for that backup run. This will attempt to contact your Exchange Server and your LeapServ to begin the restore process.
If you are presented with an error, you may want to check the status of you Exchange server and LeapServ. Otherwise, you should receive a message telling you the restore has begun and a restore report should be created for you to follow the progress of the restore. Restore reports are located in the Reports tab by clicking on Restores. Just search for reports from your LeapServ.
