Exchange Message-Level Backups
Setup your Exchange® server to do message-level backups with BitLeap.
Requirements
- Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or above
- Outlook Web Access (with WebDAV enabled)
Exchange Setup Steps
- Create an account that will be used by BitLeap to access the e-mails in each mailbox.
- If you have Exchange 2000/2003 follow the instructions to give this new account the rights it needs in order to access the mailboxes.
- If you have Exchange 2007 run the following command for each mailbox store in the Exchange Powershell
Add-ADPermission "<store name>" -User <username> -AccessRights GenericAll.
If you would like BitLeap to backup all e-mails, you will need to create a mailbox for the BitLeap account, setup Exchange Journaling and enable Exchange Envelope Journaling as follows:
Exchange Envelope Journaling
- Download the Microsoft Exchange Server E-mail Journaling Advanced Configuration Tool
- Running the
Exejcfg.exefile will prompt you for a location to extract the tool to. Pick a location and remember it for the next step. - Open a command prompt and change the current directory to the location which you extracted the tool (see step 2).
- Type
exejcfg -eand pressEnter
Output should look like the following screenshot:

Exchange Journaling
Only complete these steps after Envelope Journaling is enabled
- Open the Exchange System Manager
- Navigate to the Store you wish to enable Journaling for (this must be done for each Store individually) by expanding
Servers>[SERVER]>[STORAGE GROUP] - Right-click on the Store, then click
Properties - Check the box for “Archive all messages sent or received by mailboxes on this store”
- Click the
Browsebutton under that checkbox and select the account you created for BitLeap - Repeat the above steps for each store on which you wish to have Journaling enabled
BitLeap Control Panel Steps
Now that you have setup your Exchange installation to allow us to access it, you can now add it to the control panel:
- Add your server with a proper hostname or IP address, description, Windows version, username and password or locate it in the existing list if it has already been added previously.
- Next to your server click
Add Backup Data - Enter a description and change the data type to
Exchange Server (message-level), then enter the username, password, Windows Domain Name and LDAP Base DN. - Now click the
Test Exchange Connectivitybutton to verify all the data entered is correct. - If the connectivity test returns OK, you can now pick what mailboxes and optionally archive mailboxes you wish to backup.
- Click
Save Changes
